23 students receive Stepping UP certificates through Computers in Homes

23 students from Course 34 graduated on Wednesday 9 December 2009 after completing 9 weeks of training every Wednesday from 12:00pm-2:30pm. Students received refurbished computers with Broadband Internet connections, an E-Learning attendance certificate for attending and participating in Computers in Homes and a Digital Porirua Trust Stepping UP certificate for completing four Digital Step for Work modules as part of their training.
Certificates were presented by Chris Kirk-Burnnand who is currently involved as a Trustee on Johnsonville Youth Grants, Whitireia Foundation and Life Education North Wellington Trusts.

Hard work and dedication saw 32 families consisting of 40 adults, successfully complete 10 weeks of training with the assistance of Tutor; Sarah Rivers and Technician; Peter Lynch. 21 families gathered each week on Wednesday from 12:00pm-2:30pm and 11 Burmese families each week on a Thursday from 5:30pm – 8:00pm to participate in Computers in Homes to learn how to use a computer, Internet/Email and Word Processing. Support was provided from Burmese interpreter; Dong Hkang to translate the English spoken lessons to Burmese..more

Nine students participating in the Stepping UP programme running through Porirua’s Mobile classroom, received their Stepping UP certificates on 19 August 2009. Each of the students worked extremely well and dedicated their time and efforts religiously in order to enhance their Microsoft Skills by attending classes at the Porirua Employment Hub.
The Stepping UP programme is a free course offered at a number of Community Access Points in Porirua. To achieve a certificate you must complete 10 hours of training which is the equivalent to 4 classes.
"Stepping Up is designed for anyone with basic computer knowledge to develop their skills a step further in areas of direct relevance to their work and life. They will learn how to use their computers and the internet effectively, from advancing their Microsoft Office skills to managing finances or finding a cheap airfare on line."

New Zealand has some encouraging overall figures on home internet use, but such high-level statistics conceal some “very disconnected” groups in the population, says Lawrence Zwimpfer of the 2020 Communications Trust.
Statistics NZ figures show that 71.6% of New Zealanders, or 1.5 million households, have an internet connected computer. “This means that more than 400,000 households don’t,” Zwimpfer says. “We asked Stats to match this with families that have school-age children. The alarming result was that more than 100,000 of these families do not have access to a computer or the internet in their homes.”...more
Microsoft New Zealand announces 1.2 Million technology boost for Skills Training

Nearly 5,000 families will benefit from digital literacy and skills training following a $1.2 million injection of funding and software by Microsoft New Zealand to the 2020 Communications Trust and regional partners.
